MRMCA Position Statement Regarding the Maryland Legislative Session

MRMCA generally supports environmental initiatives that can result in cost effective methods to lower the carbon footprint of the cement and concrete industry. MRMCA also collaborates with industry partners and helps educate the design and construction community regarding the environmental benefits, the sustainability, and the resiliency of concrete as a building or paving material.

MRMCA supports initiatives, like NRMCA industry-wide EPDs for ready mix concrete, blended cements in concrete mixes, NRMCA’s Green-Star Plant Certification program, performance specifications, use of recycled materials (fly ash and slag) to supplement cement in a concrete mix, sequestered / captured carbon technologies, and other optimization of materials or innovations in design and construction.

MRMCA is interested in legislation that supports initiatives as mentioned above. Our role is to provide resources to further educate stakeholders about the environmental benefits and opportunities within the cement and concrete industry. If determined to be necessary and as directed by the Board of Directors, MRMCA can provide a position statement regarding any pending legislation that may impact the cement and concrete industry.

WHITE HOUSE BIPARTISAN INFRASTRUCTURE LAW: WhiteHouse.gov Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

This Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will rebuild America’s (Maryland’s) roads, bridges, and rails, expand access to clean drinking water (by replacing lead pipes), ensure every Marylander has access to high-speed internet (which will need concrete to house it), tackle the climate crisis (more roads, trails, and buildings made with concrete), advance environmental remediation, and invest in communities that have too often been left behind (Habitat for Humanity with NRMCA). The legislation will help strengthen supply chains by making long overdue improvements for our nation’s ports, airports, rails, and roads. And it will drive the creation of good-paying jobs for the next decade to come.

Every single item in this Infrastructure Law creates an opportunity for the Maryland CONCRETE Industry to more than step-in and build back a better Maryland for us all.
