The 2024 ACI MARYLAND CHAPTER EXCELLENCE IN CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION AWARDS

The 2024 ACI Maryland Chapter’s “Excellence in Concrete Construction” Awards celebrates Maryland’s innovation and excellence. Now more than ever, concrete design and construction must integrate creative techniques and technologies to keep up with ever-evolving economic, environmental, and aesthetic demands. The Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards continues to provide the perfect platform to recognize these exceptional concrete projects from across the state.
Projects will be judged in the following eight (8) categories:
LOW-RISE STRUCTURES – Buildings up to three (3) stories residential (multi-family and houses), school, commercial, warehouse and industrial, etc.
MID-RISE STRUCTURES - Buildings four (4) to fifteen (15) stories.
HIGH-RISE STRUCTURES – Buildings more than fifteen (15) stories.
BRIDGES – A Structure carrying a road, path, railroad, or canal across a river, ravine, road, railroad, or other obstacle.
DECORATIVE - Decorative or architectural feature or element such as exterior or interior finishes, hardscape, ornamentation, stained, stamped, or polished concrete, art installations, etc.
FLATWORK - Pavements, parking lots, overlays, runways, taxiways, commercial/industrial floors, etc.
INFRASTRUCTURE - Basic facilities or systems serving a region or community, such as tunnels, roads, recreation, site, water, power resources, marine structures, etc.
REPAIR & RESTORATION - Any type of concrete structure, overlays, rehabilitation, remodel, retrofitting, etc.
Selected projects will be recognized from across the industry in Maryland. One person from each of the following applicable participating project teams will receive an Award:
- Developer / Owner
- Architectural Firm
- Engineering Firm
- Structural Design Firm
- General Contractor
- Concrete Contractor
- Concrete Specialty Contractor
- Concrete Supplier
- Other Participating Project Teams
GUIDELINES FOR THE ANNUAL ACI CONCRETE AWARDS
NOMINATIONS CRITERIA:
- The project shall be completed in the state of Maryland (*All Counties except Prince George’s and Montgomery County) between January 1st, 2022, and December 31st, 2023. *Projects located outside of the ACI Maryland Chapter territory (re: Montgomery & Prince George’s Counties) should be submitted to the ACI National Capital Chapter Awards.
- Project design and construction shall represent the best concept, originality, and applicability of concrete or depict advancement of knowledge, practices, and / or sustainability in the field of concrete construction.
- The Project may be:
- A cast-in-place structure / pavement
- A pre-cast / site-cast structure
- A pre-stressed / post-tensioned concrete structure
- A structure employing a steel frame provided a significant percentage of concrete is used in a creative and innovative manner.
- Concrete masonry does not qualify for this concrete awards competition.
- The size of the project or volume of concrete used in the project will not be a factor as the judging process takes place.
- Award winners may be requested to furnish additional presentation material (images, 90-second time lapse video, and / or further descriptions).
- All submittals shall become the sole property of the ACI Maryland Chapter.
- Two award-winning projects from the ACI Maryland Chapter competition may be selected to be entered into the National ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards Competition by the ACI Maryland Chapter Awards Committee. The nominating party will be notified if your Project is selected to move forward to the National competition.
SUBMITTALS MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

The Project Nomination Application must include contact information for all Project Team Participants.
Provide a written description of the Project in 300 words or less. The description must indicate, describe, and emphasize the architectural, engineering, and construction method or workmanship areas of the project which are significant and noteworthy. This information will be judged and used in print materials. (Please see waiver below).
Photographs and videos are used as part of the judging process and should depict current safety standards and proper use of personal protective equipment. Photographs should not contain descriptions and should be high resolution of at least 300 dpi. A minimum of six (6) photographs are required. Make sure your file is at least 300 dpi. In addition to the six (6) photographs, the Chapter requests that you include a 1 - 2 minute video showing the construction of the project. No animations will be accepted. Concrete and construction of concrete should be featured in some of the photos. Photographs and footage will be use in promotional material and shown as a digital presentation at the Awards Gala. |
Description of Concrete usage within the Project: In 500 words or less, describe how concrete was effectively utilized in the project, for example, to meet the end user requirements, to shorten the project schedule, sustainability methods, etc. (information will be judged and printed as entered).
Sustainability of the project (new in 2024): In 300 words or less, provide a brief description of the project's sustainability.

American Concrete Institute (ACI) Maryland Chapter Student Scholarship Programs
The ACI Maryland Chapter has approved Student Scholarship Programs to be awarded to a student(s) in the Maryland University / college system listed within. The scholarship(s) will be awarded to an individual / or individuals pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Material Sciences, Architecture, or a relevant discipline thereof.
Scholarship amount(s) to be awarded are up to $10,000 U.S. which could be split between candidates at the decision and discretion of the ACI Maryland Chapter Board. Applicants must meet all the criteria within the attached ACI Maryland Chapter Student Scholarship Programs Application. Applicants must submit the attached form via electronic submission to the attention of Mindy Green ACI Maryland Chapter: Admin@aci-md.org

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING TO THE EXAM:
Written Exam: Bring a calculator and No. 2 pencils (mobile phones are prohibited during the exam).
Performance Exam: Safety glasses, work gloves, steel toe boots, safety vest, and hard hats are required.
SAFETY: ACI Maryland Chapter will be taking precautions to ensure everyone’s safety during the exams. Social distancing is encouraged. You are required to follow any health guidelines put forth by your Examiner, Proctors, Host Property Management, and the Local Government of your testing location. Face masks are required for indoor testing sites at this time.
ADA Accommodation: You must first reach out to ACI directly for approval of the accommodation needed at least 1 month prior to the Certification Program you wish to register for. For more information:
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA): ACI Certification programs are ADA-compliant. Individuals who are seeking certification and require reasonable accommodations must provide ACI Certification with a letter from their physician that outlines the recommended accommodations. ACI will review the request and formulate a recommended course of action for the Sponsoring Group (Testing Center) to follow. All requests are handled on a case-by-case basis and must be made allowing enough time for evaluation and appropriate action by ACI.

ACI MARYLAND CHAPTER 2024 PROGRAM POLICY:
- NO REFUNDS or CREDITS will be given within 14 days of the Study Session.
- All Refunds and Credits will be subject to processing fees and study materials deductions.
- There are no returns on Textbooks. If a refund is permitted, the Textbook cost will be deducted from the final refund amount.
- NO REFUNDS or CREDITS will be given for Exam Day no-shows.
- Changes in company personnel are allowed up to 7 days prior to the exam (Company will be responsible for transferring Textbook to the new employee).
- ACI Maryland Chapter reserves the right to change, cancel, or reschedule Study Sessions, Training, Exams, Performance Evaluations, and Exam Sites at any time. ACI Maryland Chapter will contact you if any changes occur.
